WHAT’S NEXT? MATCHING CHALLENGE GRANTS.
- Paying off the mortgage gets us past step one. The next steps involve raising funds for the renovation and restoration of the Oakland Tavern, and creating vehicle access and parking.
- We have two matching grants requiring of $80,000 and another pending request for $50,000 to be matched. Our budget for renovation, restoration and driveway access is estimated to be $315,000. Therefore we need to raise $120,000 in community donations for 2006.
- A committee of the Oakland Board is meeting with the architects to create bid documents for renovation and restoration. The Museum Board is handling the contract bidding and award of the highway entrance and deceleration lane that has been proposed. At a minimum, we want to have safe access to the building for people who will use the offices of the Historical Society and the Museum.

Fundraising Progress:
Goal for Phase One of the Capital Campaign Met in 2005.
Nelson County’s first museum of history is beginning to germinate from a seed that was planted on November 16, 2004. With the purchase of a historic house called Oakland, the Nelson County Historical Society (NCHS) invested in the first artifact of its sister organization Oakland – The Nelson County Museum of History. A joint capital campaign was launched to pay for the principal and interest of a $275,000 mortgage, and to make renovations for use of the building as a temporary museum and office space. The initial goal for Phase One of the joint capital campaign was $500,000. A year later, that goal has been reached and superseded, thanks to the 280 donors! It’s been a heartening display of generosity from those who live nearby or have roots and relations in Nelson County Here’s the breakdown:
| Summary of Contributions | |
| Contributions received for Oakland and NCHS dated through Dec. 31, 2005 = | $240,829 |
| Pledges due through 2008 | 83,625 |
| Subtotal for individual donations raised | $324,454 |
| Foundation grants received and pledged for renovation | $120,000 |
| General Assembly grant for renovation; match required | 50,000 |
| Board of Supervisors grant for mortgage | 50,100 |
| Subtotal grants | $220,000 |
|
|
|
| Total of contributions, pledges and grants to Oakland and NCHS | $544,554 |

Although we have met our first benchmark for fundraising, we still need more funds to pay off the house mortgage.
Balance on Oakland mortgage $90,000.
Pledges to be applied: $83,000
Funds needed to payoff the mortgage: $7000 now; [more with each month’s interest]
We ask you to help us retire that mortgage before the year is out !
